Project Freelancing
My concept for this enterprise is to work solo or within a team on all sorts of projects related to engineering. While there are certainly topics that I have already acquired knowledge on, my ambition and self-expectation is to also work on other engineering disciplines. Having attended multiple additional math courses during my studies, I view engineering as a form of applied mathematics. For example, once you have learned about stationary electrical field theory you will find that in the mathematical tools used for modelling and analysing laminar flows in the domain of fluid-mechanics are pretty much the same.
Being willing and able to grasp new concepts quickly makes it possible, and in fact fun, to work in areas that are not necessarily my field of expertise. During my master studies therefore I decided not to choose a specific major but rather pick subjects from all over the place. I attented lectures like "Non-Linear Optics", "Digital Signal Processing" and "Introduction to Advanced Semiconductors" at the same time as learing about more 'hands-on' topics like design-rules for electrical machines, developing safe-to-use medical devices or writing a seminar paper on MEMS for diabetes patients.
Modelling, Simulation and Task Automation in PowerFactory© or COMSOL©
A professor once told me that back in his days it was socially not acceptable to study electrical engineering without learning about mechanical engineering at the same time. These days it's the other way around: courses on electrical machines can be found in virtually all mechanical engineering curriculums. I think something similar is happening with regard to learning computer science as an electrical engineer. When choosing my bachelor program, I specifically decided against CS. But working as an engineer these days is simply impossible without it.
I believe that using scripting / programming to perform modelling, calculation and analysis tasks is unavoidable to be both efficient and have a high-quality output. During my time at TransetBW therefore I always used PowerFactorys© Python-API to complete my tasks and obtained a good grasp at its internal conventions. If your company struggles with performing the same, or similar calculations over and over again, a custom-made script might be just what you need.
While working on my master thesis I first came into contact with COMSOL Multiphysics© and have been a big advocator ever since. Even if you company does not use COMSOL© I can use my own copy to create models and perform calculations on topics ranging from MEMS, Thermodynamics, Fluid-mechanics to Semiconductors and much more. Using the ApplicationBuilder and the Java-API, sustainable results can be achieved which allow you to perform small changes to the calculations without acquiring COMSOL yourself.
Reporting on the State-of-the-Art for Upcoming Technologies
Are you considering diversifying your portfolio, heard of a new trend or want to keep track of your competition? Using what sources I can find I will deliver you a comprehencive and compact report that allows you to make an informed buisness decision. Additionaly, some prototype modelling in COMSOL© or PowerFactory© can provide a first glimpse at what might be technically feasible or not.
